What is School Counseling? - Vass-Lakeview Elementary

    Greetings!

My name is Ms. Farraye and I am the School Counselor for Memorial Middle School. I am a Certified School Counselor trained to work with students, parents, staff and the community with the common goal of assisting students in achieving social, emotional, and academic success.

My Mission is to help students develop and enhance their academic, social, emotional and personal strengths in order to become responsible, successful and productive citizens. My desire is for each student to embrace their uniqueness.

I have the privilege of working with students in the following settings:

    SCHOOL WIDE PROGRAMS:

In conjunction with the counselors from Charles Olbon School and Beatrice Gilmore School, I will help coordinate school wide programs such as Start with Hello, Red Ribbon Week, School Violence Awareness Week, and Week of Respect.

    CLASSROOM LESSONS:

Lessons will be presented in a classroom to help students develop personal, social and emotional skills necessary to meet specific needs of the school population. Topics may include anti-bullying, peer respect, conflict resolution and emotional recognition and regulation.

    RESPONSIVE SERVICES:

This would entail the counselor meeting immediate student needs (counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, referral, peer mediation, information-providing.)

    INDIVIDUAL STUDENT PLANNING:

I would assist students in the formation of goals, including, but not limited to, behavioral, academic, and social.

     SYSTEM SUPPORT:

I would consult with other professionals with the goal of coordinating various support for students and families.

     INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING:

I would work with a student individually to address issues that are hindering academic and/or social success. I provide a safe, confidential and encouraging environment within the school setting. The topics are based on the needs of the student and may include: understanding feelings, changing family dynamics, grief, stress, anger, self-esteem, social skills, anti-bullying, problem-solving and decision-making.

     GROUP COUNSELING:

Group counseling is provided for small groups of students experiencing similar concerns. These may include social skills, anger management, organization skills, study skills, self-esteem. Permission slips must be signed by parents for students to participate in groups.

The Counseling Page will provide information about the school counseling program(s) as well as upcoming activities. The page will also provide parent / student resources.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at dfarraye@wpschools.org or 973-317-7768.
