Ways to Help Your Child Succeed in SchoolWhile there is a lot of learning going on in school, it is very important for your child to continue the learning process at home. Here are some ways to help you and your child bridge their school learning with home activities:
-
Establish a “backpack zone” where you and your child check his/her backpack for notes and homework assignments. Help your child re-pack their backpack each night before he/she goes to bed.
-
Encourage good manners (sharing, using please and thank you, observing rules, listening to others).
- Give your child responsibilities and praise for his/her accomplishments.
- Establish family routines for mealtime, homework, chores, and bedtime.
- Review papers being sent home. Correct errors with your child. Show your interest in his/her learning. Contact me with any questions you may have.
-
Review sounds of letters, recognition of uppercase and lowercase letters and the proper way to write your child’s name.
-
Speak in complete sentences and encourage your child to do the same.
-
Talk with and listen to your child by making eye contact every day.
-
Correct improper grammar and then have your child repeat the sentence back to you the correct way.
-
Familiarize your child with basic colors, shapes, numbers 1-20 and counting.
-
Give your child 2-3 step directions to follow - make a game out of it.
-
Encourage self-help skills (buttoning, zipping, tying shoes, snapping) and appropriate bathroom use
-
Play games with your child that requires him/her to use math and logic skills such as Crazy Eight, Connect Four, or Guess Who.
-
Provide opportunities for your child to use pencils, crayons, scissors and glue. Show him/her how to hold them correctly. Using these items improves fine-motor skills and promotes eye-hand coordination. Playdoh is also great to use!
